GST filing is a data problem first

The filing itself is mechanical. What makes it painful is the fortnight beforehand, spent correcting entries that were wrong the day they were made.

Ask a business owner what they dislike about GST and they will describe the filing. Watch what actually consumes the time and it is not the filing — it is the reconstruction that happens first.

What the fortnight before is spent on

Chasing purchase invoices that were never entered. Correcting HSN codes that were guessed. Working out whether a particular sale was interstate. Finding out that a supplier's GSTIN was recorded with a typo eight months ago and every entry since has inherited it.

None of that is compliance work. It is data correction, done under deadline, on transactions that are months old and whose details nobody remembers.

Why the errors are made in the first place

Because at the moment of entry, getting it right was slower than getting it done. The person at the counter had a customer waiting. The tax rate was one dropdown among several. The HSN code was not to hand, and the entry could be saved without it.

Every one of those is a design decision in the software, not a discipline failure in the person.

What actually reduces the pain

  • Validation at entry, not at filing. A GSTIN that is checked for format when it is typed cannot silently propagate for eight months.
  • Defaults that come from the item, not the operator. If a product carries its own rate and HSN, the counter cannot get it wrong under pressure.
  • A running view, not a monthly reveal. Knowing your position today means the filing is a confirmation rather than an investigation.

An honest limit

No software makes GST simple, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. Rules change, interpretations differ, and your accountant's judgement is not replaceable by a dropdown.

What software can do is make sure that when your accountant asks a question, the answer exists and is trustworthy. That is a smaller promise than "GST made easy", and it is one that can actually be kept.
