Worked scenario

The vehicle was ready on Tuesday and delivered the following Monday

Delivery delays in vehicle retail are usually document delays, and the documents were requested late because nobody owned the checklist.

3 min read

A buyer commits. The vehicle is allocated. Delivery then waits on paperwork moving between the buyer, the dealership and a financier, none of whom are coordinated by anyone whose main job it is.

Requested late by default

Documents tend to be asked for when they become blocking rather than at booking, because at booking everyone is focused on closing. That builds a week of delay into every financed deal.

The buyer experiences the delay as the dealer's

Whatever the cause, a customer waiting past the promised date attributes it to the dealership. Tracking financier turnaround at least makes the promise realistic in the first place.

Ownership when someone is off

Deals stall on the salesperson's day off because the checklist is in their head. Visible status lets anyone pick it up, which is worth more than any single process improvement here.

What changes

  • A document checklist per deal, with status visible
  • Requests made at booking rather than when delivery approaches
  • Financier turnaround tracked so promises to the buyer are realistic
  • Handover possible when the salesperson is unavailable
