Inspecting at the end is efficient in labour and catastrophic in risk. Every part in the batch carries whatever was wrong at setup.
First-off is the highest-value check
One part, before the batch runs, against the drawing. It catches setup errors, wrong offsets and misread dimensions — which are the failures that affect the whole batch rather than individual parts.
Recording it is what makes it real
Where first-off is an understood practice rather than a recorded step, it is skipped under pressure, which is exactly when setup errors are most likely.
The customer-facing benefit
Inspection results retained against the job answer quality queries without re-measuring, and increasingly customers ask for them as a condition of supply. A shop that already keeps them is in a stronger commercial position than one that must start.
