Worked scenario
A matter outside the practice's real capacity
A sole practitioner's main commercial risk is accepting a matter that will consume a disproportionate share of a fixed capacity.
3 min read
Capacity in a sole practice is finite and entirely personal. Every acceptance is a decision about the whole practice.
Future load is invisible
Present work is felt; work already committed for next month is not. So acceptance decisions are made against how this week feels rather than against what is already promised.
Declining well requires evidence
Referring a matter on is easier when it rests on a visible position rather than a feeling, both for the practitioner and for the relationship with the person instructing.
What changes
- Current matter load visible before accepting new instructions
- Estimated effort recorded at acceptance
- Matter types that consistently overrun identified
- A basis for declining or referring that is not instinct
