Worked scenario

Returnable containers that stopped returning

Returnable containers are an asset issued on trust, and untracked they are a recurring capital cost recorded as consumables.

3 min read

Drums and carboys are expensive and reusable. They go out with product and come back on the next delivery, mostly.

Attrition is invisible per transaction

One container not returned is nothing. Across a year and a customer base it is a fleet replacement, purchased quietly as though containers were consumables.

Balance per customer changes behaviour

A customer shown they hold eleven containers returns them. The same customer, never told, holds them indefinitely without any intent to keep them.

What changes

  • Containers issued and returned recorded per customer
  • Balance outstanding per customer visible
  • Deposits or charges applied consistently
  • Fleet size and attrition measured
