Manufacturing and Industrial
Leather Manufacturing
Hide-based production where every input is a different size and grade, and yield is the entire economics.

Also covers: Tannery · Leather Goods
About this industry
Leather starts from a natural material that varies hide by hide. Two hides of the same nominal grade cut differently, and the usable area is only known after cutting. A tannery or goods maker that costs on nominal area is costing on an assumption; the real number is the yield achieved on that lot.
Common operational problems
- Hides vary in size and grade, so standard yield assumptions are always approximate
- Cutting yield differs by operator and by pattern and is not measured
- Grading is subjective and unrecorded, so the same defect produces different outcomes
- Chemical consumption in processing is estimated rather than recorded per lot
- Offcuts have value that is realised inconsistently
Example workflows
Hide lot recorded with count, area and grade at receipt
Cutting yield measured against the lot rather than assumed
Grade recorded with the defect that caused it
Chemical consumption recorded per processing lot
Offcuts categorised and valued rather than discarded
